A wisdom tooth, also known as third molar, is one of the three molars per quadrant of the human dentition. It usually appears between the ages of 17 and 25.
The wisdom teeth usually erupt at the back of your gums, and they are the last teeth to grow. Sometimes however, there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to grow properly. Due to this, they can emerge at various angles in the jaw or they may simply get stuck. Some wisdom teeth only partially emerge through the gums. This can cause serious problems if they aren't removed. When the wisdom teeth emerge partially through the gums, this can become a magnet for bacteria, thus causing gum disease and oral infection.
